MiscRed Lily delimiter The Five Sutras and One Treatise

In Pure Land Study, originally, there were "Three Sutras and One Treatise". Two additional teachings were added to complete the Pure Land Study later. These six texts are:

  1. The Infinite Life Sutra. This is the basic text in Pure Land Study. This sutra provides a detailed introduction to the Pure Land, or the Land of Ultimate Bliss. It contains principles that can be used to build a foundation for our daily lives, as well as many valuable lessons that can help us attain happiness, a good family life, a successful career, a harmonious society, and a peaceful world.
  2. The Visualization Sutra. This sutra explains the theory and the method of cultivation in Pure Land School, as well as the Nine Levels of rebirth in the Pure Land.
  3. The Amitabha Sutra. In this sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha urged us four times to seek rebirth in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. It explains why we should go to the Pure Land and tells us how we can get there.
  4. The Rebirth Treatise (The Treatise of the Pure Land). It is Bodhisattva Vasubandhu’s commentary on the Amitabha Sutra. He uses twenty-four stanzas to praise the wonders of the Pure Land.
  5. In Ching Dynasty, a Buddhist lay practitioner Mr. Wei Yuan added "The Practices and Vows of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra" to the original "Three Sutras and One Treatise" as the fifth important text for Pure Land Study. This is Chapter 40 of the 80-fascicle Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Adornment Sutra).
  6. In early 1900’s, Patriarch Venerable Master Yin Guang added still another text, the Chapter of the Perfect and Complete Realization of Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta. This is also one chapter in a larger sutra, The Surangama Sutra. Although it contains only 244 Chinese words, this text includes the most important principles of Pure Land School. For example, it teaches us a very simple and concise method of Mindful of Buddha Amitabha. That is to perfectly control of the six senses (five senses plus mind) with continuous pure thoughts. This chapter also summarizes the effective benefits of Mindful of Buddha Amitabha as without the help of any other expedient, the mind will be opened.
